The tip of the chin stands behind the tip of the nose when viewed from the profile. In this case, the desired profile image is obtained by filling the jaw tip. The filling applied to the chin tip with a needle ensures that the chin tip becomes desired. The filling material is determined according to the characteristics of the person. These filling materials must be approved by the Ministry of Health. Although this operation does not require anesthesia, local anesthesia can be performed if the patient requests it. As a result of this procedure, which is performed in as little as 15 minutes, the patient can continue his daily life on the same day.
What is Jaw Aesthetics (Mentoplasty in Turkey)?
Although the chin is an important part of an attractive face, aesthetic problems related to the chin are not usually brought up by the patients and the demands for aesthetic intervention are usually for the correction of nasal deformities or skin sagging in the face and neck area. On the other hand, recognizing, evaluating and solving aesthetic problems related to the chin with appropriate approaches has very important positive effects on facial appearance.
On all faces that are accepted as attractive, there is structural symmetry and balance between the parts that make up the facial skeleton. The balance of the facial skeleton is possible with three-dimensional harmony and correct aesthetic ratios between the bones that make up the face.
In this direction, the evaluation of the jaw should be made according to the anatomical structures such as lips, teeth and nose in its neighborhood. Since the correction of aesthetic problems in the chin structure provides harmony between the structures that make up the face and contributes positively to the appearance of the mouth, lips and nose, it is recommended to evaluate the chin structure in all patients who demand aesthetic intervention in the face area and to solve the aesthetic problems related to the chin for a better aesthetic result.
Surgical treatment of jaw deformities is carried out in the form of implant applications or advancement or regression of the bone structure forming the jaw tip with various methods.
While the implants of different structures placed on the chin can successfully enlarge the lower face and chin in the foreground, they may be insufficient for augmentation in the up-down and right-left planes, and different surgical interventions on the jawbones may be required for these purposes.
How is Mentoplasty in Turkey Performed?
The approach to be chosen in chin aesthetic surgeries is determined according to the content and dimensions of the problem. Augmentation using a chin implant is the easiest and most effective method in cases where the lower jaw is small and behind in the profile view, in limited degrees of deficiencies in the foreground and background.
In these surgeries, which can be performed under local or general anesthesia, the chin implant in the appropriate size for the patient’s needs is inserted through a small incision made under the chin or inside the mouth and placed in the slot prepared in the appropriate place and plan on the jawbone. After this surgery, which takes less than an hour, bandage application is sufficient for a few days, and the positive effects of the surgery on the facial aesthetic appearance are immediately apparent.
Among the implants of different structures, shapes and sizes used for this purpose, implant selection is made according to the patient’s needs and the surgeon’s preference, and in some cases, the patient’s own bone or cartilage tissues can be used instead of the implant.
In advanced and complex deformities involving several planes, it is possible to enlarge, reduce or correct asymmetries by making incisions and shifts in the bone structures forming the lower jaw tip.
The physician will analyze the patient’s face and make recommendations to the patient in order to establish realistic expectations about the results of the mentoplasty surgery. The planned surgery will be explained in detail by the doctor in a way that will not leave any questions in the mind of the patient. The physician may recommend additional facial surgeries in line with his observations and the needs of the patient.
When surgery is decided, the patient’s comprehensive medical history will be taken and questions will be asked about previous surgeries. Laboratory tests may be requested according to the general health status of the patient. Before the surgery, X-ray analyzes may be requested to determine the amount of chin augmentation or reduction to be made to provide a better view, and to make changes in its height and position. The doctor should be informed about the use of any medication that affects bleeding (such as coumadin or warfarin). In the weeks before surgery, aspirin, aspirin-containing drugs, ibuprofen or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, ginko biloba extracts, vitamin E preparations should be avoided. Regularly used medications can be continued if approved by the physician. Unless otherwise informed, nothing should be eaten or drunk after midnight the night before the surgery. Teeth should be brushed before the operation.
Mentoplasty Surgery in Turkey and After
Depending on the deformity in the jaw and the procedure to be performed, the operation may take between 30 minutes and 2 hours. Since the chin rasp surgery is performed through the mouth, self-melting stitches are used, the patient is fed with liquid foods for the first 2 days, and then solid foods can be gradually switched. Silicone, polyethylene or gortex can be used as an implant, it is placed on the chin by entering through incisions made under the chin or inside the mouth. Depending on the type of anesthesia, the person can be discharged on the same day. The person can take a bath on the same day for incisions made through the mouth, and after two days for incisions made under the chin. Swelling and pain may occur around the chin for about a week after aesthetic jaw tip surgery. There may be a temporary loss of sensation in the lower lips. The incisions made in the mouth heal after the first week and the swelling around the chin almost completely disappears within 1-2 weeks. Incisions made inside the mouth do not leave any traces, while incisions under the chin can leave inconspicuous scars.
Evaluation of Jaw Patients
A careful analysis of bone and soft tissue structures such as the lips, teeth, neck soft tissues and nose adjacent to the jaw should be performed in patients who are planned to correct jaw deformities. Patients who have problems in closure of the lower and upper jaws should be evaluated by the dentist first, and it should be understood whether orthodontic treatment or surgical intervention in the jawbones is required in order to ensure normal jaw closure in these patients before an aesthetic intervention.
The structure and tension of the soft tissues in the chin and lower lip area should be evaluated in terms of tissue sagging or excessive muscle activities that may occur for different reasons in these areas.
The foreground evaluation is made on a profile photograph or a lateral cephalometric X-ray film showing bone and soft tissues. There are many different forms of evaluation in this regard. In the most accepted practical method, a vertical line is drawn from the line between the anterior ear cartilage and the lower edge of the orbit (Frankfort horizontal line) to the lower lip skin-mucous junction line (vermilion line), and the most anterior point of the lower jaw soft tissues (Pogonion) is drawn. It is accepted as a normal aesthetic appearance that it is on this line in men and just behind this line in women. If the most anterior point of the lower jaw is in front of this line, it is accepted as a large chin (macrognatia), and if it is behind it, it is considered as a small chin (micrognathia).
There are also different methods for evaluating the size, that is, the height, of the lower jaw in the upper-lower plane. Among these, the most practical approach is to evaluate the lower jaw height by dividing the lower face area into two parts that should be aesthetically equal. In this evaluation, it is expected that the lower lip skin mucous line (vermilion line) on an aesthetically acceptable face will come to the middle of the distance between the lowest point of the nose (subnasale) and the lowest point of the lower jaw (Menton). If the distance between the vermilion and menton is shorter, it can be planned to increase the height of the chin, and if it is longer, it can be reduced.
Especially in patients with congenital anomalies involving facial bones, asymmetries in different planes can be observed together in the lower jaw.
Will there be any scars after the rasping of the chin?
In the chin aesthetic operation, the scars vary depending on the area to be used in the procedure. Since the incisions made from the mouth are used in the chin tip rasping process, there is no scar after the procedure.
From which areas are the chin implants placed in the chin?
Chin tip implants are placed in the chin area with incisions made from the inside of the mouth or under the chin.
Do Implants Used Have Any Harm or Side Effects to the Body?
Implants used in the chin tip have no known side effects against the body. However, since it is a foreign material placed in the body from the outside, the reaction of the person’s body to this substance differs from person to person.
What is the Lifespan of the Implants Used?
Implants placed at the tip of the chin do not need to be replaced if no reaction occurs by the body and the person does not request removal.
Is Chin Aesthetics a Painful Procedure?
The procedure can be performed with local or general anesthesia according to the request of the person. In the procedures performed with general anesthesia, the person does not feel any pain. In the procedures performed under local anesthesia, only the thin needles used during the local application are felt to some extent, and there is no pain during the procedure.
What Kind of Anesthesia is Used for Jaw Aesthetic Operations?
Chin aesthetic operations are a simpler procedure than other aesthetic operations. For this reason, it can be done in a short time with local anesthesia. However, general anesthesia can also be preferred depending on the person’s request and suitability.
Can Jaw Aesthetics Operations Be Combined With Other Procedures?
Chin aesthetic procedures can be combined with other facial and body aesthetics. However, the most frequently combined aesthetic operations are jowl, neck and face lift procedures.
What are the Risks of Jaw Aesthetics Operation?
There is no risk other than the known general anesthesia and surgery risks.
Is there a certain age range for this aesthetic?
Jaw aesthetic surgeries are started to be performed after the person’s bone and orthodontic development is completed, that is, around the age of 18. The upper age limit for the operation is determined by whether the person has any health problems that prevent the operation.
